How to know when it’s time to replace your mattresses:
If your mats/mattresses are approaching 10 + years, or starting to look a bit worse-for-wear, keep an eye out for some of the signs, recommended by Matthew, Area Sales Manager at Wilson Agri, Specialists in comfortable cubicles:
Mattresses:
Signs to look out for:
- With mattresses, you’re looking for any splits or tears in the top cover, where moisture, muck etc can get inside and compromise comfort. These can lead to larger holes that cows’ feet can get stuck in when trying to get up and down.
- Bedding used can get trapped inbetween layers, and cause bumps and hollows which make for an uncomfortable bed. Think Princess and the pea…
Mats:
Signs to look out for:
- Mats usually start to move left and right or front to back as fixings stop holding them down properly. Bedding gets underneath them, again causing them to lift up and turn lumpy.
- Mats sometime break up and can result in concrete areas showing. Keep an eye for any joining strips under the cubicle loop that can lift and cause cow injury.
The problems…
Areas of damage and inconsistency across the shed can cause competition for beds in one area and compromises lying time for the whole herd, and since we know that lying times can impact milk yields, hoof health and more, it’s best to manage any issues before they arise…
